Safari: remove unwanted address suggestions

8 February 2023 · tutorials, office software

You type the start of an address and Safari suggests a website you no longer want to see? These suggestions come from your history, your bookmarks and the search engine. They save time, but quickly become cluttered, or awkward when you share your screen in a client meeting.

On Mac: clear your history

  1. Open Safari.
  2. In the menu bar, choose History, then Clear History.
  3. Choose the time range (the last hour, today, today and yesterday, or all history) and confirm.

To remove a single website without clearing everything, choose History, then Show All History, search for the website, select it and press the Delete key.

On Mac: limit suggestions

  1. Choose Safari, then Settings, and open the Search tab.
  2. Untick Include search engine suggestions and Include Safari Suggestions.
  3. Also untick Preload Top Hit in the background if you no longer want Safari to open a website in advance.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open Settings, then Apps and Safari.
  2. Tap Clear History and Website Data, choose the time range, then confirm.
  3. On the same page, turn off Search Engine Suggestions and Safari Suggestions to declutter the address bar.

Our tip

For demos or video calls, open a private browsing window (File, then New Private Window): no personal suggestions appear and nothing is kept in your history.

Labels may vary slightly depending on your version of macOS or iOS.
