Marketing, a tool small businesses often misunderstand

19 August 2026 · digital marketing, consulting & strategy

In many small businesses, the word “marketing” conjures up big advertising campaigns, unaffordable budgets or empty slogans. As a result, it gets put off until later, and the business misses out on a tool that, used well, costs little and pays off handsomely.

Four misconceptions that hold small businesses back

“Marketing means advertising”

Advertising is only a small part of it. Marketing is first about understanding who your customers are, what they expect, how they find you and why they choose a competitor. It is a method before it is an expense.

“It is only for large companies”

Quite the opposite: a small business, close to its customers and quick to make decisions, can test, adjust and get results very fast. A well-kept Google listing or a clear website is sometimes enough to change the number of enquiries you receive.

“My customers come through word of mouth”

Word of mouth is still valuable, but today the person who has been referred to you almost always starts by looking you up online. If they find nothing, or an outdated image, the recommendation loses some of its strength.

“I don’t have the time”

It is the most common reason, and the most understandable. It is also where an agency’s support, and automating repetitive tasks, save a considerable amount of time.

Where to start?

  1. Define your ideal customer: who they are, what they are looking for, what makes them hesitate.
  2. Put what sets you apart into one or two simple sentences.
  3. Look after your image: a consistent logo, colours and tone across all your materials.
  4. Be easy to find: a fast, up-to-date website, a complete Google Business Profile, customer reviews.
  5. Measure: a few simple indicators (quote requests, calls, visits) to know what works.

Marketing, an investment that fits your size

Good marketing is not judged by the size of the budget, but by its consistency and regularity. That is exactly what we build with our small and medium-sized business clients: actions suited to their resources, a professional image across all materials, and measurable results.
